Acer campestre, commonly known as Field Maple or Hedge Maple, is a deciduous tree native to Europe and parts of Asia. It typically grows to heights of 10-15 meters with a rounded crown. The leaves are palmate with five lobes, turning yellow to orange in the fall. Inconspicuous flowers appear in spring, followed by winged seeds that are dispersed by the wind. Field Maple is valued for its ornamental foliage, tolerance of urban conditions, and use in hedging and topiary. It is often planted as a street tree, in parks and gardens, or for wildlife habitat. The bark is grayish-brown and smooth, becoming rough with age.

Planting

  • Choose a location with moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.
  • Loosen the soil in the planting area.
  • Carefully remove the tree from its container or burlap wrap, taking care not to damage the roots.
  • Place the tree in the center of the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots.

Care

  • Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
  • Mulch around the base to retain moisture.
  • Prune to maintain shape.
  • Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
