Carpinus betulus, commonly known as European Hornbeam, is a deciduous tree native to Europe and parts of Asia. It typically grows to heights of 10-15 meters with a broad, rounded crown. The leaves are ovate to elliptic, dark green above and paler beneath, turning yellow to orange in the fall. Inconspicuous male and female catkins appear in spring. European Hornbeam is valued for its dense foliage, attractive bark, and tolerance of urban conditions. It is often planted as a specimen tree, in hedges, or as a street tree. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.

Planting

  • Choose a location with moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.
  • Loosen the soil in the planting area.
  • Carefully remove the tree from its container or burlap wrap, taking care not to damage the roots.
  • Place the tree in the center of the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots.

Care

  • Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
  • Mulch around the base to retain moisture.
  • Prune to maintain shape.
  • Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
