Corylus avellana, commonly known as Common Hazel, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to Europe and western Asia. It typically grows to heights of 3-8 meters with a spreading crown. The leaves are rounded, serrated, dark green, turning yellow in the fall. Inconspicuous male and female catkins appear in late winter or early spring. Common Hazel is valued for its edible nuts and is often planted for wildlife habitat, erosion control, and coppicing. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.
